Yun-Sheng Chen, PhD

Yun-Sheng Chen is an assistant professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is a faculty member of Beckman Institute, Nick Holonyak Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory (HMNTL), and affiliated with the Department of Bioengineering and the Department of Biomedical and Translational Sciences of The Carle Illinois College of Medicine. He earned his master’s in materials science and engineering from National Sun-Yat Sen University, Taiwan, and optics from CREOL at the University of Central Florida. Yun-Sheng subsequently attained his Ph.D. in electrical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, where he had the privilege of working under the distinguished guidance of Professor Stanislav Emelianov. Following the completion of his Ph.D., Yun-Sheng was accepted into a highly competitive postdoctoral training program, the Molecular Imaging Program at Stanford (MIPS), at Stanford University, Department of Radiology, where he worked under the supervision of Professor Sanjiv Sam Gambhir, a renowned pioneer in the field of molecular imaging. He was also awarded the esteemed Google Faculty Award, ISAC award. Yun-Sheng’s scholarly pursuits focus on developing innovative, translatable imaging, diagnostic, and therapeutic techniques utilizing light and ultrasound.

Current Members

Souradip Paul

Dr. Paul is a postdoctoral fellow. He earned his Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram. Specializing in photoacoustic computed tomography and microscopy, his expertise extends to optics and ultrasound imaging. Dr. Paul’s research significantly enhances image reconstruction and clarity, contributing to more accurate medical diagnostics.

Meenakshi Chauhan

Dr. Chauhan is a Postdoctoral fellow. She received her Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IITH), India, and worked as a postdoc at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. Specializes in biomaterials synthesis for tissue engineering and cancer drug delivery. With expertise in in vitro and in vivo testing, she also explores the immune system and immunotherapy, driving innovation at the intersection of biomaterials and immunology. In her free time, she enjoys playing badminton and spending time with nature. 

Boran Chen

Boran is a postdoctoral research associate co-advised by Prof. Chen and Prof. Jeff Moore in the Department of Chemistry. He received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Northwestern University with Prof. John Torkelson, where his research focused on developing recyclable crosslinked polymers. His current research interest centers on advancing mechanochemical dynamic therapy (MDT) for cancer treatment leveraging innovative chemistry and engineering strategies. In his free time, he loves working out, playing guitar, snowboarding, and taking road trips. 

Shensheng Zhao

Shensheng is a PhD candidate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and was the Guomoruo Scholarship honoree at USTC. At UIUC, Shensheng has received several prestigious fellowships, including the Beckman Graduate Fellowship, A.R. Buck Knight Fellowship, and Mavis Future Faculty Fellowship. Outside of the lab, Shensheng enjoys swimming and playing table tennis.

Junxi Yi

Junxi is a graduate student in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He earned his bachelor’s degree in chemical biology from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). During his studies, he was honored with several prestigious awards, including the Bronze Award for Outstanding Student Scholarship, the Wu Xuezhou Scholarship, and the Lu Jiaxi Talent Program Scholarship. Outside of the lab, Junxi enjoys bouldering, playing the double bass, and writing.

Swathi Katakam

Swathi is a graduate student in electrical engineering. She received her bachelor’s in biomedical engineering from Tulane University. She is a recipient of the Nadine Barrie Smith Memorial Fellowship. Her research focuses on exploring signal processing and deep-learning techniques to enhance the effectiveness of medical imaging tools.

Alex Li

Alex is a graduate student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Rice University and worked at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST). He is interested in leveraging signal processing and computer vision techniques to advance medical imaging. When he’s not in the lab, Alex enjoys playing soccer and connecting with new people.

Zihao Huang

Zihao is a graduate student majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering at UIUC. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Electronic Information Engineering from ShanghaiTech University. Zihao has a strong interest in biomedical imaging, particularly in photoacoustic and ultrasound imaging modalities. In his spare time, he enjoys playing soccer and working out at the gym.

Yueying (Tobby) Qiu

Yueying Qiu is a graduate student majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering at UIUC. She graduated with a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Columbia University. During her time at Columbia, her research focused on High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) and early detection of liver metastases using single-transducer harmonic motion imaging (ST-HMI), an ultrasound-based elastography technique. She is experienced in ultrasound imaging, animal handling, histopathological examinations, and microscopy. Yueying is interested in combining photoacoustic/super-resolution ultrasound imaging with deep learning for disease monitoring. In her free time, she enjoys music, food, traveling, and spending time with friends

Rebecca Huang

Rebecca is a graduate student in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at UIUC. She earned her bachelor’s degree in ECE from National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan. Her research experience includes EEG and brain-computer interfaces. In UIUC, she is particular interest in biomedical imaging, especially photoacoustic and super-resolution ultrasound imaging. Outside the lab, Rebecca enjoys watching movies, hiking, and exploring new places.

Kyle Horn

Kyle is an undergraduate student majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology at UIUC. He is interested in biomedical imaging.

Riyaan Jain

Riyaan is an undergraduate in Computer Engineering at UIUC. He is interested in combining artificial intelligence with medical imaging.

Harbin Li

Harbin is an undergraduate student majoring in electrical engineering. He has interests in signal processing applications in the biomedical field with aspirations in a career in BCI and neurotechnology.

 

Michael Feng

Michael is an undergraduate student in Computer Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His research experience focuses on computer vision, and he is passionate about applying deep learning to biomedical applications. In his free time, Michael enjoys astrophotography and skiing. He is a fellow of the PURE program at UIUC.

 

Nittin Murthi Dhekshinamoorthy

Nittin is a first-year Computer Engineering student at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Driven by a profound interest in machine learning, Nittin has already made significant strides in his academic journey. His fervent curiosity has led him to immerse himself in projects exploring the practical applications of machine learning, particularly within the realm of biomedical image segmentation. Despite being in the early stages of his undergraduate studies, Nittin exhibits a remarkable depth of understanding and dedication to his field. Nittin has aspirations to specialize in machine learning, recognizing its pivotal role in shaping the future of technology. With an unwavering determination to delve deeper into the intricacies of this field, he aims to contribute meaningfully to advancements in computer engineering and machine learning. He is the fellow of the PURE program at U of I.

 

Sathvik Pai

Sathvik Pai was an undergraduate student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who majored in Brain and Cognitive Science. He is interested in applying computational methods for biomedical image segmentation. Outside of academics, he enjoys playing basketball and soccer.
